Job Summary
As a Blood Production Officer (Known as HHTO), you will play a vital part in making sure patients receive safe, timely blood and blood products when they need them most. Working within Hospital Services, you will carry out a range of routine and non‑routine tasks that support the validation, storage and issue of blood components and tissues. You will work as part of a committed team, using your attention to detail and technical skills to maintain high standards of quality and safety. You will also support and guide less experienced colleagues, helping the team deliver a reliable service that saves and improves lives every day.
Main duties of the job
• Contribute directly to patient care by safely validating, storing and issuing blood components and tissues in line with standard operating procedures
• Help ensure high standards of quality by accurately checking products, requests and records to minimise errors and wastage
• Support emergency and urgent requests so hospitals receive the right products at the right time
• Use specialist equipment, including monitored and calibrated systems, to maintain product safety and compliance
• Work collaboratively within the team, building strong relationships to deliver a reliable and responsive service
• Provide advice, guidance and training to less experienced colleagues, supporting their learning and development
• Monitor stock levels and storage conditions, responding appropriately to alarms or deviations
• Identify issues or incidents early and refer or report them to support continuous improvement
• Take responsibility for organising your own workload while contributing to team priorities
About You
Experience and Knowledge
• Experience of working effectively as part of a team
• Experience using computers and basic IT systems for data entry and record keeping
Qualifications and Training
• A level, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification
• Or extensive experience in a logistics or supply chain environment
• Or significant experience of routine NHSBT procedures and understanding of non‑routine procedures
• At Plymouth Site only: Possess a valid driving licence allowing the holder to drive in the UK.

This post requires working from Monday to Friday, 18:30 - 23:00 every day.
