We are looking for a Commercial Director with exceptional leadership skills as well as strong interpersonal and negotiating ability, to be able to develop and lead high performing teams, acting as an advocate for change.

With responsibility for the overall management of a budget of £180m, you will be accountable for the delivery of a wide range of commercial services to NHSBT and will be the key point of contact within the organisation for all commercial matters.

You will lead the finance function to ensure it continues to evolve into an excellent and high functioning team. You will oversee commercial policy, practice and compliance and be a point of guidance on all commercial related matters.

A highly collaborative leader, you will work with other blood services in the UK and across the world in both developing opportunities, but also in identifying and managing the risks in our complex and global supply chains.

Main duties

The Commercial Director is responsible for the delivery of a wide range of commercial services to NHSBT and is the sole and senior key point of contact within the organisation for all matters relating to procurement and the commercial aspects of sales. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing, and implementing NHSBT’s overarching commercial strategy, developing the associated policies and procedures, and promulgating them effectively. Within this, to work proactively with key business leaders in developing specific strategies for the procurement of NHSBT’s key consumables / services and major projects, as well as developing strategies for sales growth in key markets.
  • Developing and delivering commercial training and awareness programmes across NHSBT, in order to raise the profile and level of skills, embed common standards and maintain awareness of the legal environment around public sector procurement and associated government and departmental spending rules. 
  • Leading, developing & coaching a commercial team, which is geographically dispersed, with a significant presence based in Bristol.
  • Maintaining a forward pipeline of procurement projects, including many of a highly critical and strategic nature to NHSBT’s objectives and leading the team in the delivery thereof, setting priorities and overseeing their completion through to approvals and execution and ensuring effective contract management is in place at all times thereafter.
  • Contributing to the strategic visioning of the businesses and functions and bringing innovation thinking to how procurement and sales may participate in the delivery of their needs, including consideration of all collaborative opportunities and thinking around market expansion and supplier and customer and product development.
  • Operating as a highly valued business partner to the operational and corporate services of NHSBT and leading, coaching and mentoring Commercial Team to do likewise.


About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Deep understanding of how commercial functions operate and proven experience of leading transformation and change improving commercial capability and introducing new tools and processes.
  • Experience of working at board level and capable of engaging effectively with staff across organisations to deliver the right outcomes and building effective key senior stakeholder relationships within complex organisations.
  • Detailed and up to date knowledge of procurement directives legislation and practise and an excellent technical understanding of public sector commercial and procurement regimes.
  • Extensive, senior strategic level experience in a commercial capacity in a large complex organisation.
  • Experience of working in a continuous improvement culture including the provision of value for money and service development.
  • Experience of delivering through people in terms of leading, developing and influencing others, evidence of significant people management skills and involvement with staff negotiations.
  • Experience of and previous involvement with organisational change programmes.
  • Experience of procurement systems, strategic implementation, and development.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary management across a multi-site base.
  • Experience of acting as part of a highly diverse and successful senior team.
  • Experience of strategic management and planning.
  • Experience of providing relevant and up to date commercial insights that help influence and shape superior commercial outcomes.
  • Proven track record of leading and delivering complex concurrent initiatives.
  • Experience of management of significant resources, and delivering against stretching organisational targets
  • Expert negotiator ability to influence others in order to deliver results.
  • Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint).


Qualifications and Training

  • A post graduate management qualification to Masters Level, e.g. MBA and role specific leadership development qualifications, or significant operational and strategic experience in a large, complex environment that would equate to such qualifications.
  • Degree at Masters Level or equivalent relevant experience to Masters level.
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).

  • A starting salary of £105,385 - £121,271 per annum in accordance with AfC.
